What will happen if I get
admitted?
When you get admitted, be rest assured that you will soon be
holding a soft cuddly thing in your hand.
That apart, you will be asked about your water bags whether
they have ruptured, about the intensity and frequency of
contractions, when you have last eaten and any other medical
problems if it exists.
An initial pelvic examination will be done to assess the
stage of labor, the status of the water bag and the position of
the fetus. Your fetal heart rate will be checked and fetal
monitoring may be initiated. You will be made comfortable and
an intravenous access may be secured.
Since you have been in touch with us, you already know what
will happen during labor. So just relax and think about the
baby to come and keep your mind open to take any decision if
need be.
Will I be allowed to eat or
drink?
No. you will not be allowed to eat and most probably, you
will not want too also. But you may be allowed to suck on ice
and take sips of water, you may even suck on a wet towel or if
you are getting too dehydrated, you will be given intravenous
fluids.
How long will my labor
last?
No one can tell that, but if you are going for the first
time, be patient and wait. It may take a little longer because
your body is not primed for it. After if you are going for it
the second or third time, your labor may end sooner, but
whether 3 hours or 23, doesn’t matter. You will be taken care
of and be prepared for everything.
What will they do if I am in
extreme pain?
Firstly, pain during pregnancy is very subjective and it
would do you good to remain calm and relaxed and you may adopt
any of the pain relieving medication given below but before
that, there are methods to relieve pain without medication
too.
