Labor and Child Birth

Heading to the Hospital

What if I am having false contractions?

It may be quite likely that after going to the hospital, you will be sent back, since you may be facing false contractions or BRAXTON HICKS CONTRACTIONS.

BRAXTON HICKS CONTRACTIONS or FALSE CONTRACTIONS

TRUE LABOR PAINS

Strength of contraction
  • may be weak and bearable
  • not very painful and
  • does not increase with time in intensity and frequency
  • strong and increasingly painful
  • Frequency increases over time.
Timing of contraction
  • can occur at any time and unpredictable
  • the length of the contraction is short(40 seconds or less)
  • is predictable because comes at regular intervals and
  • comes with increasing frequency
  • lasts a minute each
  • comes every 5 minutes
Movement and activity
  • May decrease in intensity when you walk, talk or change position
  • Felt in the lower abdomen and groins
  • Contractions remain the same irrespective of the change in activity or movement
  • Felt starting from the back and radiates to the front of the uterus and to the groins.
Feel of the abdomen
  • Feels like a semi hard thing and can be compressed a little
  • Feels like your forehead and cannot be compressed

What will happen if I get admitted?

When you get admitted, be rest assured that you will soon be holding a soft cuddly thing in your hand.

That apart, you will be asked about your water bags whether they have ruptured, about the intensity and frequency of contractions, when you have last eaten and any other medical problems if it exists.

An initial pelvic examination will be done to assess the stage of labor, the status of the water bag and the position of the fetus. Your fetal heart rate will be checked and fetal monitoring may be initiated. You will be made comfortable and an intravenous access may be secured.

Since you have been in touch with us, you already know what will happen during labor. So just relax and think about the baby to come and keep your mind open to take any decision if need be.

Will I be allowed to eat or drink?

No. you will not be allowed to eat and most probably, you will not want too also. But you may be allowed to suck on ice and take sips of water, you may even suck on a wet towel or if you are getting too dehydrated, you will be given intravenous fluids.

How long will my labor last?

No one can tell that, but if you are going for the first time, be patient and wait. It may take a little longer because your body is not primed for it. After if you are going for it the second or third time, your labor may end sooner, but whether 3 hours or 23, doesn’t matter. You will be taken care of and be prepared for everything.

What will they do if I am in extreme pain?

Firstly, pain during pregnancy is very subjective and it would do you good to remain calm and relaxed and you may adopt any of the pain relieving medication given below but before that, there are methods to relieve pain without medication too.
