What is actually happening to your baby in these weeks?

Pregnancy week 27

Note: Experts say every baby grows differently. This information gives you a general idea about fetus growth

  • This is the beginning of the third trimester
  • Your baby now weighs nearly 2 pounds/ 875 grams and measures 14.5 inches/ 36.6 centimeters from head to toe.
  • Her eyes open and close, she sleeps and wakes at regular intervals and she may suck a finger or thumb. The three layers of the eyes start forming and this is the area for receiving light.
  • Sweet dreams, little baby! Some experts believe that babies begin to dream by the 28th week. What do they dream about? No one knows for certain but the brain is active this week as well. The characteristic grooves on the brain's surface start to appear and more brain tissue develops.
  • Chalk up any rhythmic movement you may be feeling to a case of the hiccups, which are common this week and throughout the pregnancy. Your baby has them but is breathing in amniotic fluid rather than air.
  • There is a condition called CONGENITAL CATARACT which may develop because of genetic predisposition or congenital rubella syndrome. This is the condition in which the lens of the eye is opaque and not transparent.
  • Another condition called microophthalmia (or small eyes) may be seen with TORCH infections.

APPEARANCE

Your baby’s eyelids are open and he has started to blink. he looks the same as he will when born-only smaller and thinner.

MOVEMENTS

Feeling your baby move is a special feeling and it releases a surge of hormones and emotions within you. That moment of binding is the most memorable part of pregnancy.

It may vary from a slight flutter to start with to severe kicks changing even the contour of your abdomen towards the end of pregnancy.

If primed and stimulated in pregnancy, your child will respond even to you or your partner’s touch on the abdomen. It may be quiet for sometimes or active at another time but KICK COUNT is a relatively good assessment of the fetal well being. You will be asked to do a kick count to 10 minutes or in an hour or throughout the day as per the condition. You may report to the doctor if the movements are less and cherish the moments when your baby is communicating this to you.

MOTHER

Since your uterus is now up near your rib cage, you may now find yourself short of breath if you haven't already.

Starting now and continuing through the last three months of pregnancy, you may be plagued by leg cramps, hemorrhoids, varicose veins and an itchy abdomen. Are pregnancy discomforts getting you down? Try some natural remedies to perk you up.

If you were found to be Rh-negative earlier in pregnancy, you'll probably be tested for Rh antibodies this week or next and have an anti-D injection to combat the incompatibility. You may be offered a repeat injection at 36 weeks.

TIP for DADDY

Your partner may have felt the baby move since her 4th month probably.

Now you will be able to feel it too. Keep your hand on the abdomen and wait.

Your partner may help you feel it

TIP

Lying on your side gives the best circulation to your baby.

You may experience less swelling in your body if you rest on your sides
