LABOR & CHILD BIRTH

Labor and birth is one of the most memorable moments in a parent's life. Learning to work your way through can help you enjoy the experience and relax. This section helps you prepare better for this experience.

Labor and Child Birth

Stages of Labor

There are 3 stages in labor -labor-delivery

FIRST STAGE  starts with the onset of labor pains, cervical dilatation and effacement and show (blood stained discharge of mucoid material from the cervix).it ends with complete dilatation (10 cm) of the cervix.

Latent first stage of labor: In this stage there is a slow dilatation of the cervix to 3-4 cm.

What you can do

You'll probably be able to potter around the house, go for a walk, watch a video, take a warm bath, or have a nap. Relax as much as you can. Have lots of snacks, unless you feel sick.

What can I eat?

Carbohydrate-rich foods are best - bread, potatoes, pasta, raisins.
Active first stage of labor:  In this stage the contractions are faster and the dilatation progresses more quickly to 10 cm.

What you can do

This is the time when you may want to go to the hospital. You may still continue to be at home in the early phase till you are comfortable. Contractions increase in intensity and frequency causing more discomfort. At this time go with your instincts and your body. Listen to within and take a position which is comfortable for you.

Relax and take some snacks or drinks. Do deep breathing and listen to some good music. If you have learned some relaxation techniques, now is the time to practice it.

You can take a hot shower or immerse yourself in the hot water pool.

Sometimes, women reach a point in labor when the rate at which their cervix is dilating slows or even stops. Try some walking if it eases you or massage with your partner.

Releasing your emotions by shouting or crying also helps.

Taking some kind of pain reliever may help at this time.

Transition

During the transitional phase, the cervix dilates from eight to ten centimeters. Contractions may last as long as one to one-and-a-half minutes and occur every two to three minutes. You might feel shaky, shivery and sick.

What you can do

This is the time to engage in deep breathing, especially during the relaxation phases to supply adequate oxygen and blood supply to yourself and your baby. Take a position most comfortable for you.

The first stage of labor takes longer in the first pregnancy that is around 8-10 hours in the first pregnancy and 3-4 hours in subsequent pregnancies.
