Travel during Pregnancy

Travel during pregnancy appeals to most of you for various reasons like this might be the last time you are going to be alone with your partner for a long time to come. Also you just need a break. You might be tired of the morning sickness and the emotional and physical stress. So you just want to go somewhere and not do anything at all. Most of the time you will be allowed to travel unless there is a contraindication and some medical complication.

Wherever you are going take all your antenatal records with you and travel in loose clothing’s and shoes that are comfortable and fit well.

DRIVING

It is safe to drive during pregnancy but when traveling long distances, take a break after every couple of hours. Drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.
Seatbelt might be a little uncomfortable but it is still very important to wear it.
The diagonal strap should go between your breasts and the lap strap goes across the lower part of your hips, flat on your thighs and not across your bump.

TRAVEL SICKNESS

Although some travel sickness medicines are safe during pregnancy, you may do better to avoid them.’ travel band’ are bands worn on the wrists and it works on the basis of acupressure.

FOREIGN TRAVEL

These are the extra precautions that you can take during pregnancy

  • Ask your doctor whether you need any vaccinations and which are the ones that you can take in pregnancy
  • Make sure that your travel insurance covers up for pregnancy related health problems.
  • Take all your antenatal records along with you.
  • Where food and drinks are concerned, be scrupulous about hygiene. drink mineral water and avoid iced drinks as they will be mostly done with tap water.
  • Wherever you go, try to remain in the shade and drink plenty of water so as to avoid dehydration and rise in the body temperature.
